This is week 7 out of 9 in which we'll present you portraits of the Magic Marine family, including the latest updates about our qualified sailors, their dilemmas and we will share their favorite Magic Marine items! And even though all qualifying options for the members of the Magic Marine family are behind them, there still are a few milestone events in the calendar before summer starts, we will keep you posted!
Marco Grael and Gabriel Borges, representing Brazil in the 49er Class are training in Santander at the moment. Due to travel restrictions they have been sailing alone in Brazil for almost a year before getting back together with the rest of the fleet and being able to see where they stand.
Marco and Gabriel first started sailing together in the run up to Rio, on home waters they sailed to 11th place. After the summer of 2016 the duo decided to split up and both go their own ways in sailing. Both worked on different projects in the sailing industry for a while, and in fall 2018 they decided to start sailing together again and try to qualify for Tokyo. The first hurdle passed when they won gold at the Pan American Games in Peru 2019 and qualified their country.
Subsequently the pandemic created a different dynamic separating the team from their fellow competitors making it very difficult to gauge progress. Finally in early May they were back in the game with the rest of the fleet able to attend training regattas on the European Atlantic coast. This included the 49er Championships held in Cascais where Marco and Gabriel finished 4th.
The boys are very optimistic and pleased with the results so far: 'The results are very satisfying, we feel confident, we have good speed and we are a way more solid team then we were back in 2016 when we had just teamed up.'
